"Early Times in Hereford Township"

The Hereford Township Heritage Society, Inc has published a book entitled “Early Times in Hereford Township”. This book contains over 360 photographs of farms, farming practices, families, homes, occupations, schools, and other activities that were a symbol of everyday life during the period of from about 1848 through 1956. Most pages contain single photographs with documentation. This time period represents the one-room school house era in Hereford Township. The book is divided into eight chapters, each representing a one-room school house district.

The Hereford Township Heritage Society welcomes donations of various items that provide examples or knowledge concerning the heritage of Hereford Township. The list of the types of artifacts and information is endless. It is intended to make the reader think twice before discarding boxes of old paper items, photographs of people you don't recognize, old calendars, old deeds and estate records, school report cards from any year, postal items and anything else that in the paper category that dates prior to about 1955.

The Hereford Township Heritage Society, Inc. was organized for the purpose of preserving, collecting, and displaying historical artifacts of the township. Our objective is to educate the public about the unique history of the villages and farms within present-day Hereford Township, Berks County Pa. in an effort to foster preservation of our heritage.

Kriebel Farmstead Display

The Kriebel Farmstead is located on Kriebel Road in Hereford Township. It was built by the Greisemer family in the mid to late 1700s. It came under the ownership of Israel Kriebel in the early 1830s. A grist mill was constructed on the property in 1837. The farm was unique in many ways,, not only for the inventiveness and farming practices of the Kriebel ownership over the years, but also for the varied crops, including the raising of trout, the manufacture of linseed oil, and the grinding of grains in the mill.
