The Kriebel Farmsted

The Kriebel Farmsted is located on Kriebel Road in Hereford Township. It was built by the Greisemer family in the mid to late 1700s. It came under the ownership of Israel Kriebel in the early 1830s. A grist mill was constructed on the property in 1837. The farm was unique in many ways,, not only for the inventiveness and farming practices of the Kriebel ownership over the years, but also for the varied crops, including the raising of trout, the manufacture of linseed oil, and the grinding of grains in the mill.

The farm passed from Isreal Kriebel to his son, Henry Kriebel in 1860, then to Calvin G. Kriebel in 1893, followed by Andrew G. Kriebel in 1944. Andrew G. Kriebel, who opened the butcher shop in Hereford in 1898, transferred the farm and butcher business to his son, Ray Kriebel, in 1966. Ownership of the farm by the Kriebel family ended in 2003.

This 8 x 8 foot scale model of the Kriebel Farmsted was donated to the Hereford Township Heritage Society by Edmund Kuhns, East Greenville, who constructed it over the winter of 2007-2008 from over 16,000 wooden match sticks. The relocation of this display was made possible by the engineering genius of Mr. Kuhns. It was constructed in eight irregularly shaped sections that could be removed separately. It required four Kriebel descendants to very carefully move the two largest sections from the basement of the Kuhn's home, followed by transportation to Hereford Township. Reassembly in our facility occurred after the preparation of a suitable support structure.

Interested individuals can view this display by appointment. Call 215-679-5183 or by send an e-mail to HTHS@verizon.net
