Early Times in Hereford Township

This circa 1890 photograph was taken at the Bittenbender Iron Mines, located on land owned by Samuel Bittenbender in Siesholtzville. The iron miners stood on the railroad tracks the tram cars and engine used to haul iron ore to nearby Red Lion where it was transferred to standard-gauge rail cars on the Fogelsville & Catasauqua Railroad. Jacob Greiss, the father of Jacob F. Greiss, the local schoolteacher, was the second man on the ground from the left side of the photograph. The elder Greiss was an iron miner in his earlier years, who later became a carpenter, a butcher, and a farmer.
